Julio’s dilemma

Six months ago Julio Gonzalez and his sister Marcia both worked for a car company. They were both fed up with their jobs, and then Marcia broke up with her boyfriend of three years — and started to feel very unhappy. She needed something to make her feel better, so one day she said to her brother, ‘Look, i can’t go on working at a boring job, and I don’t like feeling unhappy. I want to do something new. Let‘s start our own business. I’m sure we could make a go of if we worked hard.

And so they set up a car repair business. At first everything went well. Julio put in about 60 hours a week. Occasionally he would get round to seeing a ﬁlm with his wife or going out for a drink with his friend Hedley, and that was about all. It was just work, work, work. But then one day, after a conversation with his friend, he took up golf— and now he spends more and more time at the golf course.

His sister and wife are both furious. ‘With you it’s either work or golf! What kind of a life is that?’ his wife complained to him last night. ‘If you don’t cut down on one or the other, I’m going to go on strike, and you can run this house and this family by yourself. See how you like that!’

Marcia’s sister is just as dramatic. Give up golf,‘ she told him yesterday. ‘We’ve got a factory to run!’

So that‘s Julio’s dilemma. Work, golf, his wife and his sister. As he said to his friend Hedley, ‘What am I going to do?’
